FBI Hero Dog Gio Retires After Decade of Service
After a decade of dedicated service, a distinguished FBI canine is stepping into a well-earned retirement. Gio, a twelve-year-old English Labrador, will conclude his official duties with the FBI's Crisis Response Canine Program at the end of this year. His career, spanning over one hundred assignments, has provided comfort to thousands of individuals affected by some of the nation's most tragic events.
Pioneers in Crisis Response
The FBI's formal use of therapy dogs for victim support began roughly ten years ago with a pilot program. Gio, alongside another dog named Wally, became the founding members of what is now the Crisis Response Canine Program. Their profound impact on victim engagement and recovery led the agency to expand the team earlier this year with two new golden Labrador recruits.
These specially trained dogs play a unique role within the FBI's Victim Services Division. They help create a calm and secure environment, enabling victims to share their experiences during highly sensitive investigations. An assistant director noted that the canines help victims feel more confident and able to communicate their stories clearly.
A Legacy of Comfort in Darkest Hours
Unlike police K-9s trained for detection or apprehension, Gio's mission was solely to offer solace. He has been deployed to the scenes of numerous mass casualty events, providing a gentle, reassuring presence amid chaos and grief. His assignments included responding to:

- The 2016 Pulse nightclub tragedy in Orlando
- The 2017 Las Vegas music festival shooting

Gio also made judicial history by becoming the first FBI canine permitted to accompany a witness in federal court. While a young woman gave difficult testimony against her assailant, Gio rested his head in her lap, offering silent support. His handler observed that with Gio's steadying presence, the witness grew more confident and her voice became stronger and clearer.
The Bond Between Handler and Canine
Gio's human partner, Melody, has worked alongside him for his entire career. She recalls being struck by his exceptionally sweet and calm temperament from their first meeting. For her, facilitating his work has been the highlight of her professional life.
